BWTS – Ballast Water Treatment Systems

Under Under IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), the implementation of a Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) on board has become important.

BWTS is a system designed to remove and destroy/inactive biological organisms (zooplankton, algae, bacteria) from ballast water.

For example, a ship that takes cargo from a place on the Atlantic Ocean takes sea water (ballast) with marine organizms in ballast tanks. The ship, which will discharge the ballast tank in another  port, will also discharge the organizms in the ballast tank to the sea. This will cause a marine pollution at biological level caused by organisms transported can have devastating consequences for the marine ecosystem.

Sea organizms are disposed during the balast operation. In this case, it does not have a chance to reach other seas and does not create biological problems.
